What's a rollator used for? And what standards is it supposed to meet?

A rollator offers support to people who have difficulty walking. Although for many people it can be a big step to get one, it is recommended to do so. By using a rollator indoors and outdoors, you regain your mobility and independence.

What standards does a rollator have to meet?

A rollator is a medical device that provides support in various situations. A rollator must therefore meet a number of requirements to ensure safety. Pay attention to the following points when purchasing a rollator:

Stability

One of the most important qualities a rollator needs to have is stability. When a rollator is not stable, this can lead to dangerous situations. Make sure you choose a solid and stable rollator.

Manoeuvrability

Manoeuvrability is also an important point. Manoeuvrability depends, among other things, on the size and design of the wheels. The smaller the wheels, the better the manoeuvrability. The degree of comfort also depends on the wheels. Large tyres provide a lot of stability and extra comfort when you go for a walk in the woods, for example. But beware: an indoor rollator is absolutely not suitable for outdoor use!

Weight

The rollators of today are almost all lightweight. Lightweight rollators are usually between 4,8 and 8,6 kilos. Sometimes there are still old-fashioned rollators sold that are heavier and weigh around 14 kilos. So, before you make a purchase, pay attention to the weight. A lightweight rollator is a lot better to operate.

Braking system

The braking system of the rollator is also essential. There are rollators with a brake system that works with a hand brake. There are also rollators that are equipped with a brake bracket. Think well in advance about what you find useful. This prevents unpleasant surprises later.
