Treatment and recovery

To let the ankle heal, fractures are fixed, and the bones are set, so they can heal and grow back together again. After that, your ankle will be placed in a plaster cast for 4 to 6 weeks. In the more severe cases, the patient will have to undergo surgery. During the surgery, the broken bones are replaced in their natural position and fixed with plates and screws. After the surgery, there is a period of 6 weeks in which the leg can and may not be loaded. Under the supervision of a physiotherapist, the resilience can slowly be built up again. The overall rehabilitation can very well take up to a year. However, this depends on the fracture, the number of weeks your ankle is placed in a cast and the natural condition and functioning of the patient. To improve the rehabilitation or to prevent an ankle fracture, you might consider wearing an ankle support.
