Overstretching

An overstretched thumb is an acute situation. This means that the thumb is bent backwards or sideways by incorrectly blocking a kick or punch or another way of contact. Because of this, the ulnar collateral ligament, or joint ligament, is torn. It can even occur that it is completely torn off, in this case surgery is needed. An injured thumb is more common because it is positioned different from other fingers.

Treatment and Recovery

Exercise is good for quick recovery, but it must be prevented that the sensitive thumb remains irritated due to minor or severe overstretching. Even minor irritations ensure that recovery takes longer. Depending on the severity of the overstretching, you can choose for physiotherapy / hand therapy, immobilisation by a splint, a plaster cast 3 to 4 weeks or surgery. If the overstretching is not severe or if you have had surgery, you can use one of our products to prevent or remedy it. For example, the Novamed Manu Thumb Support and the Novamed Thumb Support / Wrist Splint help tremendously with these complaints.
